We continue to work our way to show you how to make all of the colorful candy toppings for the upcoming Unicorn Café doll sweet treats. Today I will share with you how we made the polymer clay doll sized candy sour belts. I was pleasantly surprised how easy these clay candies were to make. The polymer clay candy sour belts were our favorite topping for the Unicorn Café doll shakes!
The Air Heads Xtremes candy was our inspiration for the doll sized polymer clay sour belts. All Unicorn Cafes need rainbows!
Pick your clay colors of choice. You only need a small amount of the colored clay. I mixed the colored clay with a larger amount of translucent clay. All clay used was Sculpey III.
Use a roller machine. We used roller setting 4. We purchased our clay machine at A.C. Moore for $9 with a coupon.
Roll out each color and stack in desired color placement.
Cut away uneven edges to get a nice rectangle. I laid a metal ruler on top of the clay to use as a guide for my blade. I used an xacto knife for larger cuts. My stack was about a 1 cm high with all four layers. It measured 6 cm long.
Cut your belt to desired thickness. I cut my belts 2-3 mm in thickness…I just eyed it up.
I coated the clay belts in Translucent Liquid Sculpey and coated them with fine white craft sand.
You can find fine white craft sand at most craft stores. My favorite sand to craft with for polymer clay can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/214111323/fake-sugar-powder-for-miniature-foods
Coat each belt with the sugar sand.
Before baking, position and roll the clay in desired shape. Think about how you will use the belt on your doll shakes. We left several belts flat to use in our scene displays.
We baked out polymer clay sour belts at 200° for 12 minutes. Let cool. Once dry you will need a sealant to prevent some of the sugar from falling off with play. My absolute favorite sealant for polymer clay is PYM II. http://www.pymii.com/ It’s kind of pricey, but it dries fast, leaves no sticky residue, and has minimal to pleasant odor.
Your polymer clay candy sour belts for your American Girl doll sized Unicorn Café treats are complete!
